NEW ORLEANS, La. – The University of Memphis track and field program has six performers on the U.S. Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic team for the 2019-20 indoor season, the organization announced Friday.

Memphis placed three student-athletes on each of the two USTFCCCA academic squads (male/female). The six are: Parker Evans, Kolbeinn Gunnarsson, Samantha Lenton, DeeNia McMiller, Amber Simpson and Jordan Wesner.

To earn the USTFCCCA All-Academic individual honor, the student-athlete must have a 3.25 cumulative grade-point average (GPA) or higher and finished the indoor season ranked in the top 96 in any championship individual event or in the top 48 in any championship relay event.

In previous seasons, USTFCCCA All-Academic honors also included the outdoor campaign, but the 2020 season was canceled due to the pandemic.

Memphis track and field has had student-athletes receive USTFCCCA All-Academic recognition a total of 104 times over the last 10 years (2011-20). In six of those 10 years, the Tigers had 10 or more student-athletes named to the academic team.

Of this year's six honored Tigers, five made repeat appearances on the USTFCCCA All-Academic team. Previously, Gunnarsson earned the recognition in 2016-17 and 2017-18; Lenton in 2018-19; McMiller in 2017-18; Simpson in 2018-19; and Wesner in 2015-16, 2016-17, 2017-18 and 2018-19.

McMiller also was named a USTFCCCA Indoor All-American in the women's weight throw earlier this summer. She qualified in the weight throw for the NCAA Indoor Championships, but did not compete as the event was canceled due to the pandemic. McMiller, who won silvers in the shot put and weight throw at the American Athletic Conference Championships, set a school record in the weight throw this season.

Wesner, a 2019 USTFCCCA Indoor All-American, won the third American Athletic Conference men's indoor high jump crown of his career in February. He holds school records in both the indoor and outdoor high jumps.

Evans (weight throw), Gunnarsson (200m/4x400m relay), Lenton (shot put/weight throw) and Simpson (weight throw) all scored points in their events at the American Athletic Conference Championships.
