Dutch scientific research organisation TNO is to work with the CrossWind consortium to demo a floating solar project at the 759MW Hollandse Kust North offshore wind farm off the coast of the Netherlands.
TNO said the PV demo will have minimum size of 0.5MW and will be constructed in 2025.
CrossWind, a joint venture between Shell and Eneco, secured the rights to HKN last week and plan to have the wind farm in operation in 2023.
TNO said floating solar is expected to make an important contribution to the energy transition.
The Netherlands is predicted to have 200GW-peak of installed solar energy capacity in 2050, 45GWp of which will be offshore and 25GWp on inland water bodies, it said.
“Important research themes for offshore solar energy are the robustness and reliability of such systems, the energy yield and the ecological effects,” TNO added.
TNO program manager for solar energy applications Wiep Folkerts sad: “TNO congratulates the Crosswind consortium on being awarded the project.
“We are proud to be part of this great project and we are happy to be able to make an innovative contribution to renewable energy generation in the North Sea.
“A combination of offshore wind and solar energy can become an important factor in achieving the climate goals.”
