
Four current Virginia Tech players, Mark Lawrence Jr., Connor Johnson Jr., Drew Brockwell and Cameron Moore, join former player Mikey Moyers and Hokies assistant coach Todd Eckstein in the 96-player field. Lawrence is ranked first in the current VSGA Men's Rankings. Moyers is third and Brockwell is tied for 14th.
Lawrence won this event in 2017 and is fresh off his win at the 2020 State Open of Virginia in July. He was the medalist in 2018 and runner-up to Hokie Maclain Huge in 2015. Moyers, a former pro who has regained his amateur status, was medalist in 2009. Moore, Lawrence and Connor Burgess advanced to match play last season. Burgess qualified for this year's event, but is not playing due to preparations from next week's USGA U.S. Amateur in Bandon, Oregon.
Beginning with Huge's win in 2015, Hokies won three consecutive VSGA State Amateurs. Joey Lane on in 2016 at the Pete Dye River Course of Virginia Tech and Lawrence won in 2017 at the Club at Creighton Farms.
The field will play 18 holes of stroke play on both Monday and Tuesday. The top 32 players will advance to match play, which begins Wednesday morning. Round of 32 and round of 16 matches will be played Wednesday, Aug. 5. and quarterfinal and semifinal matches will be played Thursday, Aug. 6. The 36-hole championship match is scheduled for Friday, Aug. 7, with the first 18 holes beginning at 7:30 a.m. and the next 18 starting after lunch. The winner receives the Schwarzschild Brothers Trophy.
