Six Huskies in Action Around the Globe - Northern Illinois University Athletics

depolitikblog.blogspot.com
DEKALB, Ill. – While the current Northern Illinois University men's soccer team awaits its upcoming season in the spring, six former NIU soccer players continue to ply their trade in four countries around the world.

Sean Totsch (2010-13) and Kevin Rodriguez (2015-18) represent the Huskies in the United Soccer League (USL) Championship, the second tier of professional soccer in the United States, with Totsch playing for Louisville City FC and Rodriguez representing Rio Grande Valley FC.

Totsch, who has won three USL Championship titles, helping Rochester Rhinos to top honors in 2015 and Louisville City to crowns in 2017 and '18, is once again helping to lead Louisville City toward the top of the USL Championship. The club currently leads the Group E standings on 23 points (7-3-2) with Totsch having made 10 starts along the backline. The Oswego, Ill., native scored his first goal of the season in a 1-1 draw against Saint Louis FC on August 29.

Louisville City returns to action on Wednesday, September 16 when it travels to Indy Eleven, who is just one point behind Louisville City in the Group E standings.

In his second professional season, Rodriguez has played in eight matches, making six starts, for Rio Grande Valley FC in Group D of the USL Championship. The midfielder from Pasadena, Texas returned to the starting lineup last time out against San Antonio FC (Sept. 5). Last season, Rodriguez played 22 matches for Rio Grande Valley, scoring a pair of goals while making 18 starts.

Up next for Rodriguez and Rio Grande Valley is a home game against FC Tulsa on Saturday, Sept. 19.

Christian Molina (2016-19) is in his first professional season, playing with Union Omaha in USL League One, the third tier of professional soccer in the United States. Molina has appeared in five matches this season, including a pair of starts, and scored his first professional goal, a 78th minute game-winner, against FC Tucson on August 29.

Union Omaha currently sits third in USL League One with a 4-1-4 record and hosts New England Revolution II on Saturday (Sept. 19).

Huskie fans can watch Totsch, Rodriguez and Molina on ESPN+ as all games in both the USL Championship and League One are shown live on that platform.

A trio of Huskies are also playing in Europe, with Isaac Kannah (2011-14) in Denmark, Andrew Palumbo (2013-14) in Sweden and Luke Read (2014-17) in England.

Kannah recently signed with FC Roskilde in the Danish Second Division, who are just two games into their 2020-21 season. Kannah has played in both league matches for FC Roskilde, starting one and coming off the bench in the other. His first game for the club came in the first round of the Danish Cup on September 1, when the forward from Plymouth, Minn., came on as a substitute and scored a pair of goals in a 6-1 win over BK Frem Sakskøbing.

FC Roskilde's league season continues Sunday, September 20 on the road against Avarta and they will meet Ledøje-Smørum Fodbold in the Danish Cup Second Round on Tuesday, October 6.

In Sweden, Palumbo and his club, Grebbestad IF, are chasing promotion with 17 points in eight matches, currently third in the 14-team Division 2 Norra Götaland with the top two clubs earning promotion.

Playing his second season with Grebbestad, the midfielder from Fort Myers, Fla., has made six league appearances this season, netting goals in back-to-back matches against Sävedalens IF (Aug. 22) and IFK Tidaholm (Aug. 29).

Grebbestad plays again on Friday, Sept. 18, when it travels to Vänersborgs FK.

Read began the 2020-21 campaign for Carshalton Athletic this past Saturday (Sept. 12) in the FA Cup, the oldest soccer competition in the world, as the center back played the full 90 minutes in a 5-1 victory over Whitstable Town in the Preliminary Round. With the win, Carshalton earned a place in the FA Cup First Round Qualifying, where it has been drawn at home against Faversham Town.

The league season for Read and Carshalton gets underway this Saturday (Sept. 19) in the Isthmian Premier Division with a home match against Potters Bar Town; Carshalton was third in the Isthmian Premier Division in 2019-20 when the season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
