Two-alarm fire in Passaic displaces six families, damages two businesses on Main Avenue - NorthJersey.com

A two-alarm fire on Main Avenue in Passaic on Saturday morning damaged two stores and six apartments.

While an investigation will be conducted, it appears the fire started in the basement, perhaps in an electrical panel, officials said.

All six families living in the six apartments, 24 people in all, have been accounted for, Mayor Hector Lora said. However, 18 will need to be relocated.

The three-story building had many of its windows damaged and a charred piece of wreckage spilled onto the sidewalk.

The fire was deemed under control at 9:36 a.m.

The two businesses closed from the fire Saturday were KB Supermarket and Tibi Beauty and Nails. Around noon, the supermarket owner was removing perishables like milk and juice, trying to save the goods from spoiling.

Passaic was assisted by the Clifton Fire Department. Neither store owner was available for comment.
