PEORIA (HOI) -- Tiffeny Harden said she enjoyed her time at South Side Mission's New Promise Center, so she was surprised she only had seven days to relocate her and her six young children.
Harden and her family have been living in shelters in Peoria since June. She said she and her kids were forced into this situation after a man, who was supposed to fix her car, stole her money.
In September, the Harden family came to the New Promise Center. Tiffeny enjoyed the services and stability and thought this was the place that could help get things back on track.
"They were really willing to help, more than any other place I had ever experienced," said Harden.
However, on November 23rd, she was told the shelter would be closing. She had only seven days to find a new place for her family to live. South Side Mission management apparently told her the decision to close the shelter had been made after years of discussion.
"Why would you continue to let people in, and offer them a place to stay, knowing that you're [gonna] just boot them out...it's still a situation where it could have been handled completely different," said Harden.
South Side Mission released a statement regarding the closing, it read in part "...our recent shelter residents have all successfully found a new place to continue on in their journeys."
The statement did not mention Harden or her children, nor did it mention how much time residents were given to relocate.
