Boulder County reported 147 new cases and one new death Thursday, while state outbreak data showed there are six new outbreaks in the county.
Boulder County Public Health spokesperson Chana Goussetis said the person who died Wednesday was in their 70s and did not live in a long-term care facility. The death brings the county’s death toll from coronavirus to 142.
To date, Boulder County Public Health has reported 12,719 positive or probable cases. There have been 372 people hospitalized. As of Thursday, there were 68 people hospitalized. In the past two weeks, there have been 553 new cases per 100,000 people.
The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment on Wednesday released its weekly outbreak report. It showed new outbreaks at Longmont Christian School, St. John the Baptist Catholic School, Boulder Manor, Flagstaff Academy, Hillside School and Applewood Living Center.
Jenny Albertson, Boulder Manor administrator, said that the care facility is in the process of having its outbreak cleared, but is awaiting final test results.
Albertson said four residents tested positive.
“When you have something that small you assume it is probably not facility acquired, it is community acquired,” she said. “We are talking about medical appointments, emergency department visits, that’s the only time people leave the building. It was not wide-spread with our staff at all. We had one person test positive a month ago from the staff perspective. That person didn’t return to work, so there is no way they spread it.”
State data shows the outbreak was determined Dec. 2. Four residents and nine staff members have tested positive for the virus, the data shows, and one staff member also was probable for the virus. However, Albertson said there are currently no staff members infected with the virus. She said the last staff member who tested positive got their results Nov. 14.
Albertson said Boulder Manor, 4685 Baseline Road, has not had an outbreak since the spring. State data shows that Boulder Manor’s last outbreak was in April and that it was resolved in July.
The outbreak at Flagstaff Academy, a K-12 charter school at 2040 Miller Drive in Longmont, was determined on Dec. 3, according to state data. State data shows that two staff members and four attendees tested positive for the virus.
Wayne Granger, Flagstaff Academy’s executive director, said there were two separate cases of household contact infection, separated by 13 days as well as Thanksgiving break. Granger said these individuals both happened to be in the same in-person class.
“Boulder County Public Health reported this as potentially meeting the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment criteria of 2 cases in the same cohort within 14 days,” Granger wrote in a statement. “Neither of the students had been in the building upon testing positive to require additional students to quarantine or take any action inside the school. In consultation with BCPH, the students were advised to stay home themselves and isolate. Only because they both attend Flagstaff Academy and are coincidentally in the same class do these otherwise independent cases meet the outbreak criteria as established by CDPHE.”
An outbreak at Hillside School, 7415 Lookout Road in Longmont, was determined Dec. 3, state data showed. There were two staff members and three attendees who tested positive for the virus, according to the data.
Lindsay Eddy, director of advancement and COVID-19 Coordinator for the school, said Hillside’s outbreak coincided with a high spike of COVID-19 across the county and state.
“We weren’t able to definitively determine where the positive cases originated from,” Eddy said in an emailed statement. “Hillside has invested in mitigation tools and strategies above and beyond the health department recommendations and even offered free COVID-19 testing for all students, faculty, and families.”
To mitigate any possible exposure, the first person to become symptomatic and the cohort was quarantined, Eddy said.
“The safety and well-being of our entire community always comes first, so shortly after that we made the decision to transfer to a remote platform until January 11 because of the high community transmission in Boulder County,” Eddy wrote. “We hope to return to in-person learning in January and feel confident we can mitigate secondary transmission with all the safety measures we have in place.”
The outbreak at Longmont Christian School, 1440 Collyer St. in Longmont, was determined on Dec. 3. The data shows one staff member and one attendee tested positive. The K-12 school didn’t respond to request for comment by deadline.
St. John the Baptist Catholic School, 350 Emery St. in Longmont, had its outbreak determined Dec. 3. The data showed that seven attendees tested positive and one attendee was a probable case. The K-12 school didn’t respond to request for comment by deadline.
Applewood Living Center, 1800 Stroh Place, had its outbreak determined Dec. 2, according to state data. There have been 25 residents and 11 staff members who have tested positive for the virus, the data showed. The care facility didn’t respond to a request for comment by deadline.
The care facility last had an outbreak in May, state data showed. That outbreak was resolved in July.
There are now 50 active outbreaks in the county.
The University of Colorado Boulder reported on its online coronavirus dashboard that there were 11 positive test results found out of 128 diagnostic tests taken Wednesday. The campus also conducted 471 monitoring tests. None of the university’s isolation space is in use. Since the start of the semester on Aug. 24, there have been 1,682 positive results. There have been a total of 14,213 diagnostic tests taken and 69,292 monitoring tests.
Boulder Valley School District reported on its online dashboard that there are four positive cases, one probable case and one case with symptomatic/pending test results. The district also reported one active case at the Boulder Transportation Terminal.
The St. Vrain Valley School District reported on its online dashboard that there are 33 positive cases, split between 16 students and 17 staff.
Statewide, the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment reported that there have been 276,995 positive or probable cases. There have been 3,759 deaths among cases and of those, there have been 3,005 deaths due to COVID-19. There have been 15,656 people hospitalized. Of Colorado’s roughly 5.7 million population, there have been 1,914,803 people tested.
