WARNING: The following contains spoilers for SWORD #1 by Al Ewing, Valerio Schiti, Marte Gracia & VC's Ariana Maher, on sale now
Since the formation of Krakoa, the X-Men have been perfecting how to truly utilize their powers to the best of their ability. While teamwork has always been a central tenet of the X-Men's success, the idea of mutants helping each other and using their powers in conjunction with each other has been taken to a new level in the Krakoa era.
And in SWORD #1, this brand of "mutant technology" has resulted in the formation of the Six, a powerful group of mutants who might just be Marvel's most impressive exploration team ever.
Mutant technologies has become the blanket term for when two or more mutants use their powers in sync to achieve a previously impossible end. The most notable example of mutant technology in action is the Five -- five mutants who use their powers together to effectively resurrect any mutant who dies in a new body. This newest advancement in mutant potential however has been established as a part of S.W.O.R.D: the Six. The Six is designed as a two-pronged group that can locate any necessary items or elements from across reality on a multiversal scale and bring those items back to the Peak.
The Six is made up less of specific people and more certain roles, which are currently filled by a quickly-assembled roster. This includes the Control (the adaptable technopath Wiz-Kid), the Power (Fabian Cortez, who's energy augmentation increases the power of the other members of the group), the Shield (Armor, who works with Wiz-Kid and Cortez to protect the entire group from the elements around them), the Guide (Manifold, who connects to the teleporters and navigates the Six through the multiverse), the Eye (Peeper, who can use his broad-spectrum vision to spot specific particles of their target) and the Foundry (Risque, who can use her powers to create a small field around whatever they've found to help bring it back to Earth).
They're aided by another group of six mutants, the First Circuit of the Six, a collection of long-range teleporters who can channel their powers together to create a portal capable of transporting an entire team beyond reality. This circuit consists of Manifold, Blink, Lila Cheney, Vanisher, Amelia Voght and Gateway. They work in tandem with Manifold, whose own impressive teleportation powers then carry him and the rest of the Six through a portal towards full retrieval.
Manifold then connects with the rest of the teleporters, who are able to draw the team back to the Peak. Their first mission is carried out with Magneto watching -- leading to the successful acquisition of Mysterium from the depths of the multiverse. Unlike the Five -- where each member has very specific roles within the group and the loss of one potentially disrupts the entire process -- the Six are more easily able of introducing replacements into the structure. This includes citing Magik as a potential back-up for the first circuit and listing other specific mutants who could fill positions within the second circuit, such as having Forge, Skids, and Zorn be prepared to take over the roles of the Control, the Shield, and the Foundry respectively if absolutely necessary.
Like the Five, the Six have the potential to change the future of the mutant race. Even stealing away the strange Mysterium -- which is revealed to be the title of the issue -- is just proof of how major this advancement really is. Now, mutants are capable of acquiring the kind of materials that would have previously been impossible to secure by any other means. This seems to open the door to mirror's the core of Krakoa's terrestrial diplomacy on a galactic scale by giving mutants exclusive access to highly valuable items.
Even if the X-Men have problems still on Earth, the advancements of the Peak are building a new future for mutants in the final frontier.
