L3Harris Technologies (NYSE: LHX) has won a potential $121.6M other transaction award from the Missile Defense Agency to conduct an on-orbit demonstration of a space-based prototype sensor designed to track hypersonic and ballistic threats.
MDA received four proposals for the project through a competitive solicitation among industry participants in Phase IIa of the agency's Hypersonic and Ballistic Tracking Space Sensor program, the Department of Defense said Thursday.
The agency will obligate $25M at the time of award and expects the company to finish work on July 14, 2023.
L3Harris, Raytheon Technologies (NYSE: RTX), Northrop Grumman (NYSE: NOC) and Leidos (NYSE: LDOS) each received a $20M contract in October 2019 to develop HBTSS payload concepts.
The HBTSS system is intended to operate with the Space Development Agency’s tracking satellites as part of a planned sensor layer in low-Earth orbit.
The satellite for the program will be built with medium field of view sensors to process fire control data and support “birth to death” tracking of missiles threats.
