Capcom has been ramping up promotion in anticipation of Resident Evil Village releasing on May 7th. The recent Resident Evil Showcase included a lengthy gameplay preview of the eighth Resident Evil game as well as an announcement for a new multiplayer title, Resident Evil RE:Verse. Possibly the most exciting news to come out of the showcase was that fans could get their hands on the experience immediately, with the Maiden demo becoming available only on PlayStation 5 later that day (and almost immediately crashing the PlayStation Store). Capcom set the precedent for modern Resident Evil demos when the demo for Resident Evil 7, known as Beginning Hour, offered players a chance to play a canonical, visual and atmospheric sample of what was to come in the full game. So where does Resident Evil Village's demo take place?
The Maiden demo offers players a chance to get a sneak peek at the most enticing of Village's set pieces: Castle Dimitrescu. Taking advantage of the new PS5 features, Maiden is playable in 4K resolution with all the glitz of ray tracing. The interiors of Castle Dimitrescu are quite stunning in the short but effective demo. Maiden (and consequently, Village) is arguably the best looking game thus far to come out of the RE Engine, the in-house engine created by Capcom for Resident Evil 7. Many of the textures in the demo hold up under scrutiny, the candle-lit interiors are satisfyingly elegant, and the buckets of blood in the dungeons have convincing liquid animations.
Maiden is a fairly short romp through the Resident Evil Village setting, offering only the smallest insight into what the complete game will offer. Capcom was clear that the purpose of Maiden is primarily to show off the visuals, which may be the demo was only available on PS5 at first. Once the demo is completed, there's even a message where the demo refers to itself as a visual showcase. Although it's light on gameplay, Maiden certainly sets the tone for what players can expect to find when Village hero Ethan Winters enters the castle.
The RE8 Demo Helps Village Seem Like a True Sequel
In Maiden, players take control of a a silent protagonist, referred to in the Resident Evil Showcase as simply the Maiden. Clues found throughout the demo suggest the Maiden once worked for the castle denizens and has fallen out of favor, like others before her. It seems that those who do not properly appease Lady Dimitrescu and her daughters become candidates for some nefarious experiment. All signs seem to point to Lady Dimitrescu's secret wine ingredient being human blood.
Much like the Resident Evil 7 demo, Maiden doesn't have any combat mechanics, and won't offer a sample of RE8's new inventory system as players crawl out of their cell in the dungeons and attempt a quick escape from the castle. Their only options when confronted by Lady Dimitrescu's insect swarm daughter are to run and hide. Those who played Resident Evil 7 will feel right at home searching for keys and solving puzzles to open doors. The gameplay and controls are almost identical to RE7, but even this short demo makes it appear that the scope of Resident Evil Village will be quite a bit larger than its predecessor.
