Resident Evil 8's Village Demo Needed More Gameplay | Screen Rant - Screen Rant

The first of three new Resident Evil Village demos was available for PlayStation 4 and 5 players for only eight hours. In addition, there was a limit on play time which capped players at half an hour to explore Resident Evil 8's village setting. While a non-combat demo was previously available exclusively on PS5 called Maiden, this new demo gave players their first taste of the actual gameplay and story of Resident Evil Village. Unfortunately, this taste was incredibly small, because despite being a gameplay demo, it heavily featured cutscenes which took up a large portion of the allotted play time.

The Resident Evil Village demo began with Ethan Winters conversing with an odd old woman in a village square. She carried a staff adorned with skulls and spoke in riddles concerning the enigmatic Mother Miranda and Ethan's daughter, Rosemary. This conversation is thankfully over quickly, and the player can explore a few nearby buildings. The entire Resident Evil Village demo features only a handful of enemies to fight before the player runs into two characters - Elena and her injured father. Ethan then leaves through the back of the house they are hiding in, climbs over a crumbling wall, and opens the gate into Luiza's property, where Elena says the villagers are gathering for safety. What follows is a roughly two minute long cutscene.

Once inside Luiza's house, the player has the opportunity to look around a small room before being led down a hallway. At the end of the hall, another nearly five minute long cutscene begins. Shortly after that is a very scripted sequence where Ethan escapes a burning house. After fleeing from the fire, the player can explore a little bit more, but they have returned to the previous area and there is nothing new - only the end of the  demo. This amounts to the first offering in the Resident Evil Village Gameplay Demo featuring a disappointing amount of actual gameplay.

The RE Village Gameplay Demo was Less Interesting than Maiden

Where the Resident Evil 8 Demo Takes Place

The cutscenes in the Resident Evil Village gameplay demo provide very little interesting exposition, and combine to make an extended version of footage already shown in the Resident Evil Village trailers. The amount of combat in the gameplay demo is short-lived and not very exciting. The player gets a look at the new werewolf-like enemies and how they might behave in the full game, but that is about it. Even though there is a bit more to actually play in Resident Evil Village's gameplay demo, it leaves a disappointing impression when compared to the Maiden demo, which had no combat at all.

Maiden took place sometime prior to the story of Resident Evil Village and offered a compelling look at Castle Dimitrescu's dark secrets. The gameplay demo offers little that wasn't already shown in the trailers, and serves only as a reminder of what the combat felt like in Resident Evil 7. Why even put a half hour time limit on the gameplay demo if there is almost nothing to do before it's over, especially when the player is gated into a small area anyway? A much more effective approach for getting players familiar with Resident Evil Village's gameplay would have been to drop them somewhere in the game with a relatively large explorable area and no narrative context. It's supposed to be a gameplay demo, not a presentation of a few of Resident Evil Village's cutscenes.
