The North Dakota Construction Leadership Council event is intended to give those who are seriously interested in construction careers a glimpse into the industry. Attendees will not only get a chance to operate heavy equipment, but also will find out what's new in the construction industry, learn about construction employment opportunities and network with NDCLC and Association of General Contractor members.
The morning schedule is reserved for pre-registered high school students, while the schedule from noon to 4 p.m. will be open for pre-registered adults and college students who are interested in construction careers.
"We are really hoping to have a good turnout at the event with the idea behind it being that our industry is a great one to join for anyone," says Brittany Diederich, president of the NDCLC and director of finance and administration of Industrial Builders in West Fargo. "The high school side is targeted to say there is a rewarding career that provides significant financial stability without a college degree, so it is a fair consideration as they get closer to graduation."
Diederich says the opportunity to get behind the wheel of heavy equipment will likely be a major draw and even people in her own office are excited at the chance to operate an excavator.
The demo yard, located at 11506 38th St. S., in Horace, will be divided into six equipment sites, where trained operators will review controls with attendees, set out cones and then let participants try their hand at operating the equipment for a few minutes. (No worries about skidsteer smash-ups; the operators will keep close watch so nothing goes awry, Diederich adds.)
Attendees will have a chance to operate a Komatsu loader, excavator or dozer, a Bobcat skidsteer (conventional as well as remote controlled) and a 40-ton or 165-ton mobile crane.
In addition to the hands-on demos, a free lunch will be served from noon to 1. Organizers will also give a short presentation on the NDCLC and construction industry, which will include sharing financial information on average wages/benefits/retirement funds for different types of jobs within the industry, Diederich says.
"Our whole perspective is that our industry is fun and interesting, but the money is also really good," she says.
All activities and the lunch are free, but an RSVP is required as attendance is limited. Interested high school students (ages 16-18) must contact Patrick Mineer, founder and CEO of Golden Path Solutions, to ensure waivers and parental permissions are followed beforehand. Email patrick@goldenpath.net to receive a waiver and RSVP link.
Adults and college students interested in attending are asked to sign up at agcnd.org/clc and sign a waiver by Monday, April 26.
The event is also hosted by General Equipment & Supplies, Inc.
