The Historic Lewes Farmers Market will be open from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., Saturday, June 26, and its popular demos will return starting at 10 a.m., in the tents near the Stag Run Farm space. They will feature the best local chefs demonstrating recipes using local market produce, meats and more, and discussions led by local farmers and experts on subjects ranging from beekeeping to growing peaches. Now’s the time to come to market not only to shop for incredible local food, but also learn how to create a new recipe, get gardening advice and more.
This Saturday, the HLFM celebrates National Pollinator Week with featured guest Sumner Crosby of the Lewes Beekeeping Club. Crosby will describe the important role of pollinators in human lives and how to protect them, and discuss beekeeping basics. Stag Run Farm will offer a tasting of many delightful honeys at its tent. There is also local honey at Fifer Orchards and Honey Bee Lake Apiary. At Earth Harmony Produce, customers will find low-maintenance perennials that attract pollinators to the garden. For more information, go to pollinator.org/pollinator-week.
At the market, there will be blueberries, cherry tomatoes and slicer tomatoes, many peppers including shishito and poblano, strawberries, sugar snap peas, chards, arugula, broccoli, lettuces, kale, bok choy, microgreens, eggs, tilapia fish, crabs, oysters, beef, pork, chicken, honey, jams, fresh-baked breads, honey, kombucha, pastries made with fruit from market growers, hemp products, flower bouquets, fresh-cut herbs, plants and much more.
The Saturday market takes place at George H.P. Smith Park, at the corner of Dupont and Johnson avenues. In case of inclement weather, the market moves to Shields Elementary School parking lot, Sussex Drive and Savannah Road.
The HLFM’s Wednesday market at Crooked Hammock Brewery is now open from 8 to 11 a.m. with 11 farmers/producers: 302 Aquaponics, Baywater Farms, Bennett Orchards, Bodine Farms, Dittmar Family Farms, Hattie’s Garden, Jackie Blues, Kalmar Farm, Mandala Pies, Stag Run Farm and Totem Farms.
The market continues its SNAP (EBT food stamps) program. To help lower economic barriers to local, healthy food, the HLFM matches up to $20 each participant each week with HLFM Bonus Bucks, which SNAP participants can come to the SNAP tent at the market to pick up and use at the market. WIC and SFMNP coupons will also be accepted.
HLFM customers who want to help feed the local community may purchase local produce, meats, milk, and other food from market vendors every Saturday for donation to the Epworth United Methodist Church Food Pantry. At the end of the market, the produce and other foods are gathered and given to Epworth. The HLFM thanks its customers for their generosity.
