It was a back and forth game today between the Brewers and Rockies. However, it was the Brewers who put together the bigger inning to take the win.
The game didn’t start well for the Brewers and starter Adrian Houser. Raimel Tapia of the Rockies led off the game with a single, then stole second with Yonathan Daza at the plate. Daza then drove Tapia in, singling to center to give the Rockies the early 1-0 lead. The Rockies did get another runner to second in the inning, but Houser held the Rockies from scoring again.
The Brewers responded right away, though. Kolten Wong led off with a double to put a runner in scoring position right away. Two batters later, Christian Yelich brought Wong in, singling to right to tie the game at 1-1. Another two batters later, Willy Adames was at the plate. Rockies pitcher Anthony Senzatela appeared to have the strikeout of Adames to end the inning. However, a balk was called, erasing strike three. Adames would end up drawing a walk, and then Tyrone Taylor brought another run in with a single to give the Brewers a 2-1 lead.
Both teams didn’t score again until the fourth. Trevor Story led off the fourth getting hit by a pitch to put the lead runner on base and advanced to third on a Ryan McMahon groundout. C.J. Cron then walked with one out to put two runners on base. Brendan Rodgers brought in Story from there, tying the game back up at 2-2.
It didn’t take the Brewers long to recover though. Keston Hiura led off the fourth with a single, then Manny Pina walked to put two runners on base. With two on, Adrian Houser came up for the sacrifice bunt. He got the bunt down, and C.J. Cron tried to field the ball but bobbled, then fell as he tried to throw to third and the ball went down the left field line. That allowed Hiura to score, and Pina also tried to score but was caught at home on a good throw from Raimel Tapia. Houser also made it to third on the play, and the Brewers had the 3-2 lead. They wouldn’t be able to tack on to that, and the score remained there after four innings.
Once again, the Rockies responded in the top of the fifth. Daza walked with one out, but was erased when he was caught stealing second by Pina. Charlie Blackmon put another runner on base with a single, and then Trevor Story gave the Rockies the lead again with a home run to center, putting the Rockies up 4-3.
The score would remain there until the seventh inning. Facing former Brewer Jhoulys Chacin, Avisail Garcia hit a solo home run to left, tying this game back up at 4-4.
The Brewers weren’t done there, though. Entering the eighth, the game was still tied at 4-4 with Carlos Estevez coming in to pitch for the Rockies. He walked Daniel Robertson to start the inning, and then hit Manny Pina with a pitch to put a second runner on base. Jace Peterson bunted to follow that up, but the bunt was good enough to become a single, loading the bases with no outs in the inning. Pinch-hitter Omar Narvaez would make sure that wouldn’t be wasted, hitting a sacrifice fly to score Peterson and put the Brewers ahead 5-4. With the lead, the Brewers kept tacking on runs. Luis Urias followed that up with a single to score Pina and Peterson, and the lead was up to 7-4. Ben Bowden came in to relieve Estevez after that, but the Brewers weren’t done. Christian Yelich showed some of his power, hitting the first pitch he saw out of the park to increase the lead to 9-4.
The Brewers still weren’t done though. Garcia came up next and hit a ground-rule double to put another runner on base, and Adames doubled to drive him in, increasing the lead to 10-4. In total in the eighth, seven of the first eight batters in the inning reached base, and the only runner that did not still drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. From there, Miguel Sanchez took the ninth in relief for the Brewers, and worked a quick 1-2-3 inning to secure the Brewers 10-4 win.
It was a bit of a rough day for Brewers starter Adrian Houser, who pitched five innings and allowed four runs on five hits and four walks, with four strikeouts to go with it. However, the Brewers bullpen remained as strong as ever. Brent Suter took two innings and struck out three while working around two hits. Brad Boxberger had two walks in the eighth, but didn’t let them score as he also struck out two. Miguel Sanchez had the ninth and used a 1-2-3 inning to end the game.
On offense, the team recorded fourteen hits, four walks, and a hit by pitch in total. Every starting position player reached base at least once, and Adrian Houser (the only starter to not “reach base”) still contributed with a nice sacrifice bunt that scored a run. Kolten Wong and Avisail Garcia had three hit days, and Christian Yelich and Tyrone Taylor each added two hits as well.
One unfortunate note from the game is that after going 3-for-4, Kolten Wong exited the game at the top of the eighth inning. Official word was “left calf tightness”, but after the game, manager Craig Counsell said that it was hopefully just a cramp and Wong should be fine (but likely will get tomorrow off to rest).
The Brewers now have the series win and will go for the sweep tomorrow afternoon. Eric Lauer will face Chi Chi Gonzalez in the matinee game. First pitch is at 1:10 pm.
