OTTAWA — The Putnam County Fair ended Saturday with a smash, crash and crunch as drivers participated in the fair’s annual demolition derby. The demolition derby was just about the only normal fair event that took place last year.

“We did it last year. We had a good turnout and it looks like we’re going to have a huge turnout tonight. But it feels good to have more people back here with the community back and coming out supporting us. It’s been great. Everything’s been great for us this year,” said Jason Beckman, director at the Putnam County Fair, prior to the derby Saturday night.

The infield was a hive of activity as drivers prepared for inspection.

Brent Verhoff of Miller City is in his second year of driving in the derby.

He modified a 2002 Chevy 1500. Last year he finished fourth at the Putnam County Fair in the truck division, driving a different truck.

Prior to the derby Verhoff reflected on why he got into the demolition derby competition.

“I grew up around it. My uncle and everyone in my family for about the first five years of my life, they were really big into it,” Verhoff said.

His strategy for competing is simple — “Stay out of the wet spots, it’s when you get stuck. Avoid the wall, take your shots, do more damage to him than you do your own self,” Verhoff said.

Tyler Zehring from Bowling Green has been competing in the demolition derby for eight years.

“I like the truck class. It’s hard-hitting. Lot’s of adrenaline, there’s nothing like it,” Zehring said.

This is Zehring’s second demolition derby this year.

He competed in the one at the Paulding County Fair a couple of weeks ago and finished fourth.

His strategy for winning — “smart hits, use my head and try to keep calm in there,” Zehring said.

He appreciates being able to crunch his opponents, given many races were canceled last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“It feels good to get out of the house and see other people and getting back to a normal society and everything,” Zehring said. “It feels good to be back at the county fairs again.”
