
Six Hofstra alums will take the field for their respective teams during the four-month PLL season:
Ryan Tierney '21 - Whipsnakes
Jack Concannon '18 - Atlas
Brendan Kavanagh '18 - Chrome
Josh Byrne '17 - Chaos
Finn Sullivan '16 - Redwoods
Steve DeNapoli '11 - Waterdogs
Tierney joins the two-time defending PLL champion Whipsnakes after being selected in the second round of the 2021 PLL College Entry Draft following an All-American season with the Pride. Tierney racked up 65 points on 43 goals and 22 assists this past season as the Pride advanced all the way to the Colonial Athletic Association Championship Game. The CAA Offensive Player of the Year and All-CAA First Team selection this season, Tierney broke program and conference records for goals (164) and points (251) in a career in 2021.
Kavanagh played in all five games for the Chrome during the 2020 PLL Championship Series and posted three points on one two-point goal and one assist with five ground balls. Kavanagh suited up at attack for the Pride in 51 games from 2015-18 and scored 48 goals and dished out 27 assists for 75 points. He picked up All-CAA First Team and All-ECAC Second Team honors as a junior in 2017.
Concannon backstopped the Atlas in all five of their games last season and recorded 69 saves, a save percentage of 57%, and a 12.16 GAA. Concannon was a two-time All-America selection in 2017 (second team) and in 2018 (third team) and received All-CAA First Team honors three times in his Hofstra career. He appeared between the pipes in 45 games for the Pride in his career and was a regular among the top goalkeepers in the country in save percentage and goals against average.
Byrne finished the season with the second-most goals of any player in the PLL in 2020 with 13, and added an additional seven assists to put him in a tie for third with 20 points as the Chaos made it all the way to the championship game, and he dazzled the lacrosse world with a between-the-legs goal against the Archers in the PLL Semifinals. As a two-year member of the Pride, Byrne scored 111 points on 71 goals and 40 assists in 29 games, and he was an All-America selection and CAA Offensive Player of the Year as a senior in 2017.
Sullivan started in all six games at close defense and tallied seven ground balls and four caused turnovers as the Redwoods advanced to the semifinals and were an overtime loss away from playing in the championship game. During his four-year career in Hempstead, Sullivan played in 46 games and totaled 112 ground balls and 45 caused turnovers. He was honored with the CAA Defensive Player of the Year Award and a spot on the All-CAA First Team as a senior in 2016.
DeNapoli played for the expansion Waterdogs in 2020 and totaled one two-point goal and one assist along with 14 ground balls and six caused turnovers from the short-stick defensive midfield position. In 57 ames for the Pride from 2008-11, he totaled 195 ground balls along with 12 goals and 11 assists. DeNapoli was named to the CAA All-Rookie Team in 2008 and earned All-CAA Second Team recognition in 2009.
The 2021 PLL season will open this weekend from Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Massachusetts, with Sullivan's Redwoods taking on the Cannons on Friday (June 4) at 7 p.m. Hofstra's James M. Shuart Stadium will host several PLL games this season from July 2-4. All PLL games this season will be broadcast on NBC, NBC Sports Network, and the Peacock app.
