depolitikblog.blogspot.com

The Historic Lewes Farmers Market will be open from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., Saturday, July 24, at George H.P. Smith Park, Johnson and DuPont avenues in Lewes. In case of inclement weather, the market moves to Shields Elementary School parking lot at Sussex Drive and Savannah Road.

At 10 a.m. this Saturday in the demo tents, Doug Wood of 302 Aquaponics will discuss aquaponic farming, how it is different from hydroponic farming, and the role tilapia plays on his farm.

At the market this week, there will be watermelons, cantaloupe, heirloom tomatoes, sweet local corn, peaches, blueberries, cherry and slicer tomatoes, pepper varieties including shishito and poblano, chards, arugula, broccoli, lettuces, kale, mushrooms, microgreens, eggs, tilapia fish, crabs, oysters, beef, pork, chicken, honey, jams, fresh-baked breads, kombucha, pastries made with fruit from market growers, hemp products, flower bouquets including sunflowers, fresh-cut herbs, plants and much more.

The Historic Lewes Farmers Market will hold its Tomato Festival Saturday, Aug. 7. This year there will be The Biggest Tomato at Market Contest, tomato hand stamps for kids, a Guess the Number of Tomatoes in the Jar contest, and a demo by Cape Gazette food writer Denise Clemons at 10 a.m. Heirloom, cherry, and slicer tomatoes will be available in abundance. The market holds the festival each year to celebrate National Farmers Market Week, which this year takes place Aug. 1-7.

The HLFM’s Wednesday market at Crooked Hammock Brewery is now open from 8 to 11 a.m. with 11 farmers/producers: 302 Aquaponics, Baywater Farms, Bennett Orchards, Bodine Farms, Dittmar Family Farms, Hattie’s Garden, Jackie Blues, Kalmar Farm, Mandala Pies, Stag Run Farm and Totem Farms.

The market continues its SNAP (EBT Food Stamps) program. To help lower economic barriers to local, healthy food, the HLFM matches up to $20 each participant each week with HLFM Bonus Bucks. SNAP participants can come to the SNAP tent to pick up the bonus $20 in tokens to use at the market. WIC and SFMNP coupons will also be accepted at the market.

The HLFM continues its partnership with Epworth United Methodist Church Food Pantry. HLFM customers who want to help feed the local community may purchase local produce, meats, milk, and other food from vendors to donate to the Epworth program every Saturday. The produce and other foods are gathered after each market session and given to Epworth. The HLFM thanks its customers for their generosity.
