Man gets six to nine years in prison for abusing girlfriend's toddler son - SalemNews.net

LISBON — Thomas C. Browning III, the 37-year-old East Liverpool man convicted by a Common Pleas Court jury in late June for the abuse of his girlfriend’s toddler son between Christmas 2019 and March 11, 2020, was sentenced to six to nine years in prison by Judge Scott Washam on Friday.

Assistant County Prosecutor Tammie Riley Jones had asked for a minimum seven-year prison sentence for Browning for the charges of felonious assault and child endangering, citing both the seriousness of his injuries to a small child, who at the time lived in his house, and the fact that Browning has a past criminal record that included charges of assault and domestic violence. Additionally, Jones said Browning never appeared to show any real remorse during the jury trial, during which he took the stand and testified for part of one day.

Some of the injuries to the boy, who turned 2 years old during the time period of the abuse, included violently pulling his hair and pinching his ears. A black eye, bruises and injuries described at the trial included the pooling of blood under the scalp where the skin was pulled away from the bone.

Michael Thorne, the current caregiver for the now 3-year-old boy, spoke at the sentencing hearing and thanked those who fought to give justice for his nephew.

“To see my nephew to be hurt and have bruises to the point I couldn’t recognize him was the most heartbreaking thing I have seen in my life,” Thorne said.

Although it has been more than a year since he was removed from the situation, Thorne said the boy continues to have problems sleeping and is very cautious of men, especially those with beards like Browning had. Thorne described an event when a friend with a beard came over and the child screamed and ran and hid in a closet.

“I haven’t seen any remorse on your face, Mr. Browning,” Thorne said. “All I have seen is someone who continues to point the finger at someone else. I will never fully move on from this until you have paid for the pain you have caused to my awesome, cool, smart and funny nephew…”

His defense attorney Joseph King said Browning continues to disagree with the decision of the jury and his version of what happened has not changed from what he testified to during his trial. Browning and King had offered others as possibly responsible, including the child’s mother, Michaele Thorne.

“I do regret not reporting this sooner,” Browning said. “Your honor I have worked very hard, extremely hard over the years with the support of my community, my family to turn my life around and make better choices for myself.”

While Browning admits he has a history, he said that is behind him and he is no longer that person. He also said he continues to care for the children in the community, including the neighborhood children.

There was a large number of supporters of Browning in the back of the courtroom for the sentencing hearing, enough so that Washam addressed them before the hearing and warned them about possible contempt of court charges should there be any outbursts, even if they did not agree with what was being said or his decision in the case.

Sheriff Brian McLaughlin, Chief Deputy Jennifer Tucker, other deputies and bailiffs were in the courtroom and they remained quiet during the hearing. But as Browning was taken into custody following the hearing, one family member could be heard saying “No justice, no peace,” which has been a chant often used during the protests this past year regarding ethnic violence and the police. Another person in his corner said “he was railroaded.”

Following the hearing, a woman identifying herself as Browning’s aunt said the family are sticking behind him and believe him to be an innocent man. She indicated the family plans to appeal the results of the jury trial.

“He mentors children, he doesn’t harm them,” she said.
