Demo permit for Nurse’s Quarters still on hold - Buckrail

JACKSON, Wyo. — The Jackson Town Council discussed a 90-day hold on the demolition permit for the properties at 157 and 165 North Glenwood Street, known as the Nurse’s Quarters, during the Sept. 21 town council meeting.

Following a lengthy and sometimes confusing discussion between the council, staff and the applicant, the council ultimately moved a motion to continue the item to the next meeting on Oct. 4.

The Teton County Preservation Board requested a 90-day stay on the demolition permit application, submitted by Bear Development, LLC the developer of the property. Luxury apartments, already underway at the adjacent property will be erected on the site.

Nick Orthmann, represented Bear Development LLC. during the meeting. Orthmann explained that they have been working to save the historic buildings through relocation specifically with Shacks on Racks.

“We’d love to save the building if we could,” Orthmann said.

Orthmann expressed that they would like to begin demolition work on the property aside from just removing the structures. “If we push another 90 days to Dec. 20 it just becomes more and more difficult to stay on track.”

The demolition permit is all-encompassing, including above and below grade work.

Bear Development, LLC. previously extended a demolition permit to 120 days to provide more time for the structures to be removed.

“We would like to stay the course and we would like to relocate the structures in a reasonable amount of time, by the end of the year,” Orthmann said.

Vice Mayor Arne Jorgensen brought up the fact that the buildings might not have a place to be moved, even with a 90 day hold. “We’ve heard from them [the applicant] that there intent is to move these building, that requires a place to move them to, which they may not have control of,” Jorgensen said.

The town of Jackson staff will look into solutions to condition the 90 day stay as well as the demolition permit to allow work to begin at the site while the removal of the structures continues to be negotiated.
