Oakland County has stamped out its place as the elite location of high school volleyball

Along with the last six Division 1/Class A state champions, Oakland County has also been the home to the last four winners of the Miss Volleyball Award.

In 2021, there’s a strong chance Oakland County will crown its fifth consecutive winner of the honor.

The 11 finalists for the award were announced last weekend and six come from this area, four of which come from two teams.

Miss Volleyball recognizes the top senior in the state for their achievements on the court over their prep career, as well as their academic success and involvement in the community.

Birmingham Marian outside hitter Ava Brizard joins teammate, middle hitter Sarah Sylvester as finalists this year. Notre Dame Prep setter/outside hitter Aly Borellis joins teammate, libero Josie Bloom as finalists as well. The other two area finalists are Detroit Country Day middle hitter Serena Nyambio, and Stoney Creek outside hitter Sydney Tomlak.

These six join Cadillac setter Renee Brines, Grand Rapids Christian outside hitter Evelyn Doezema, Lakewood outside hitter Maradith O’Gorman, Forest Hills Central middle hitter Brooklyn Connor, and Byron Center outside hitter Taylor Humphrey as the 11 finalists for the award.

Here’s a closer look at Oakland County’s six contenders.

Josie Bloom, Notre Dame Prep: Bloom is committed to play at Virginia Tech in college. She has been part of the Irish varsity program since she was a freshman and has taken on the primary defender role for NDP this season, leading the Irish to a 28-0 record thus far. Bloom has over 1,200 digs over her career and has 173 through 52 sets in the 2021 season. She earned Second Team All-State honors in Division 2 in 2020. Bloom has been part of three Irish teams that have reached at least the state semifinals.
