Six boaters were rescued from the bay waters off LBI in the early hours of Sept. 19 by the U.S. Coast Guard and the Beach Haven Volunteer Fire Co. after their 30-foot pleasure craft struck a fixed aid to navigation in the vicinity of Ham Island.
Chief Warrant Officer Adam Murray, commanding officer of Coast Guard Station Barnegat Light, said three of the individuals rescued were airlifted to a trauma center out of the area. The other three were transported to Southern Ocean Medical Center in Stafford Township, he added. All six boaters sustained multiple injuries as a result of the collision.
A Coast Guard crew from Station Beach Haven pulled five of the six boaters from the water, according to Murray. The Beach Haven Volunteer Fire Co. rescued one boater, he said.
“Someone sitting on their balcony heard the crash and screaming, then called 911,” Murray said.
The call reached watchstanders at the Coast Guard Sector Delaware Bay Command Center around 12:18 a.m., according to a statement from the Fifth District’s Public Affairs Office.
A 29-foot small response boat from Station Beach Haven was launched at 12:20 a.m., along with an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter aircrew from Air Station Atlantic City. A personal watercraft crew from the Beach Haven fire company and police department was also deployed to the scene.
At 12:32 a.m., the boat crew from Station Beach Heaven and the personal watercraft crew from the Beach Haven fire company successfully rescued the boaters from the water.
The Coast Guard’s Aids to Navigation Team, based in Cape May, will actively work to fix the impacted aid to navigation. In the meantime, Sector Delaware Bay issued a safety marine information broadcast to mariners to be aware of any potential debris in the area of the crash. —G.G.S.
