Six Wolves Earn GNAC Cross Country Academic Accolades - WOU Athletics

PORTLAND, Ore. – With the season already off to a strong start for the Western Oregon University cross country programs, six student-athletes were named to the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Academic All-Conference Team, Presented by Barnes & Noble College on Wednesday.

Kaylin Cantu is on the list for the third-straight season, while Emmett Klus receives the award for the second-straight year. Joining Cantu and Klus is Keanu Daos, Chase Eckenfels, Dustyn Mckenney and Bailey Smith.

Cantu, a junior from Mount Angel, Ore., holds a 3.37 GPA and is majoring in exercise science. Cantu began her cross country season last time out in the Mike Johnson Classic when she ran to a time of 24:54.3 to come in 52nd.

Klus, a sophomore from Burns, Ore., holds a 3.44 GPA and is majoring in psychology. Klus also began his cross country season last time out in the Mike Johnson Classic when he posted a time of 26:55.6 to come in 40th. He led a big group of Wolves to cross between 40-50 in the race, as WOU had four place between 40th and 49th.

Mckenney, a freshman from Clovis, Calif., holds a 3.79 GPA and is majoring in business. Mckenney's GPA leads the group on the list as he also opened his cross country season in the Mike Johnson Classic as he was part of the group to finish with Klus coming in 49th with a time of 27:11.1.

Smith, a junior from Cody, Wyo., holds a 3.70 GPA and is majoring in communication. Smith's GPA is the second-highest on the list and he opened the cross country season last time out in the Mike Johnson Classic as he was right in the middle of the pack between Klus and McKenney when he crossed in 44th with a time of 27:04.3.

Daos, a junior from Kennewick, Wash., holds a 3.38 GPA and is majoring in communications. Daos began his cross country season in style during the Ash Creek Collegiate when he won the race with a time of 18:22.1. He bested a total of 101 runners in the field and helped lead WOU to a second-place overall team finish.

Eckenfels, a freshman from Burns, Ore., holds a 3.38 GPA and is majoring in math. Eckenfels began the cross country season in the first meet of the year at the Ash Creek Collegiate when he came in 67th with a time of 21:04.2. He also ran in the Mike Johnson Classic a few weeks later.

WOU returns to the course this week as they will travel to Chicago to compete in the Lewis Crossover this Saturday.
