NORTH OLMSTED, Ohio -- A few years after entertaining seniors with a St. Patrick’s Day program, Cannon Irish Dance returns Nov. 17 to the North Olmsted Senior Center.
However, this time around the idea is to transform the spectators into participants getting exercise doing their own special version of “Riverdance.”
“We were approached by Peggy Cannon from the Cannon Irish Dancers who said she started doing an Irish dance and exercise program that’s part of SilverSneakers,” North Olmsted Senior Center Activities Coordinator Beth Reitz said.
“That means it’s free of charge to those who have SilverSneakers. We thought it might be another fun dimension of our exercise program schedule here.”
The Irish Dance Demo is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Wednesday (Nov. 17). Seniors must call 440-777-8100 to register. Reitz said so far a half dozen participants are signed up.
“The class uses a variety of Irish dance styles from old style to social dance to very basic traditional Irish step dance,” Cannon said. “Everyone can enjoy and benefit from the class.
“No previous dance experience is necessary, and you do not have to be of Irish descent to enjoy the class. Seniors can participate whether they do so standing up independently, seated in a chair or holding on to a chair for balance assistance.”
The benefit of the Irish Dance program is to keep the mind and memory sharp with participants memorizing step patterns. The dancing also increases good balance and helps with arthritis by strengthening muscles around the joints.
Also, the lively and rhythmic Irish music not only makes the class enjoyable and feel less like exercise but also lifts the spirits of those who are lonely or isolated.
“Dance offers a wide variety of benefits for seniors, therefore it is also a great fit for the SilverSneakers program,” Cannon said.
The Irish Dance Demo is also a perfect fit alongside other Senior Center exercise programs such as standing and chair yoga and a Geri-Fit class.
“This is a very different exercise program that also involves dance,” Reitz said. “And it actually gives us the opportunity to add a SilverSneakers program here once again.
“This would be a nice chance for us to put it back on the schedule. We’re going to give it a go and see how the interest is. If we find there’s a following, we’ll probably do a six-week trial and to see if interest stays high.”
