NEW ULM — He’s too young to have a driver’s license, but 14-year-old Tate Isaacson of New Ulm was pretty excited after winning the new youth class at the Brown County Fair demolition derby Thursday.
The trophy he received was just about at tall as he is. He also received $700 for finishing first.
“The money will go into his savings account,” his mother Amy Isaacson said.
Amy Isaacson competed in the powder puff division in Nicollet County Fair demolition derbies several years ago.
Isaacson drove a 1980 Chrysler Newport that was not heavily damaged in the youth class, for 14-17 year-olds. The event included two other competitors — Colton Roiger, who was named hardest hitter and Madison Price.
Amy Isaacson said Tate might compete in the Full Throttle Fall Nationals demolition derby Saturday, Sept. 17. That event offers more than $31,000 in total prizes at the Rice County Fairgrounds in Faribault.
Charlie Piper won the midsize class. He was followed by Travis Schneider, Jeremy Menz and Max Stevenson. Schneider was named hardest hitter.
Tyler Scharfencamp won the ’80s and newer class. Following were Peyton Engelking, Caleb Trebesch (hardest hitter), and Savannah Green.
The ’80s and newer contest was stopped for a time to check on competitor Drew Reinarts. After several minutes, he was helped out of his vehicle and did not continue.
Brad Stanoke won the mighty mini (vans). Following were Schneider, Michael McDermott (hardest hitter), and Anthony McDermott.
Marcus Lang won the pickup truck class. Following were Kevin Andrews, Parker Neid and Jordan Reinarts.
Saturday’s demolition derby at the fair begins at 6 p.m.
