Britain reported 3,240 new cases of COVID-19 on Sunday, a drop from 3,398 cases the previous day, and six deaths within 28 days of a positive test compared with seven on Saturday.

The total number of people who had received the first dose of a vaccine increased to 39,259,168, Public Health England said.

JERA and IHI to demo ammonia co-firing at a large-scale commercial coal-fired power plant - Green Car Congress

In Japan, JERA and IHI Corporation will conduct a demonstration project under the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization’s “Development of Technologies for Carbon Recycling and Next-Generation Thermal Power Generation / Research, Development and Demonstration of Technologies for Ammonia Co-Firing Thermal Power Generation” program. This will be the world’s first demonstration project in which a large amount of ammonia will be co-fired in a large-scale commercial coal-fired power plant.

Ammonia enables efficient, low-cost transport and storage of hydrogen. In addition to this role as an energy carrier, it can also be used directly as a fuel in thermal power generation. As a fuel that does not emit carbon dioxide when burned, ammonia is expected to offer advantages in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

The demonstration project aims to establish ammonia co-firing technology by co-firing coal and ammonia at a large-scale commercial coal-fired power plant and evaluating both boiler heat absorption and environmental impact characteristics such as exhaust gases. The project will run for approximately 4 years from June 2021 to March 2025.

In the project, JERA and IHI plan to demonstrate an ammonia co-firing rate of 20% at Unit 4 of JERA’s Hekinan Thermal Power Station (power generation capacity: 1GW) in FY 2024.

JERA is in charge of ammonia procurement and construction of related facilities such as the storage tank and vaporizer, while IHI’s role is to develop the burners to be used in the demonstration. The two companies are moving forward with design and construction.

In addition, in order to ensure the reliability of high-volume ammonia co-firing, the two companies plan to verify the necessary parameters for developing the demonstration burners by conducting small-scale ammonia co-firing tests using burners of different materials at Unit 5 of the Hekinan Thermal Power Station (power generation capacity: 1GW) from August to December 2021.

Earlier in May, JERA and Yara agreed to cooperate in the ammonia value chain business, including development of a blue ammonia production plant. Blue ammonia produced using CO₂ offset technology and green ammonia produced using renewable energy are needed to reduce carbon emissions through the entire ammonia life cycle.

Yara is one of the world’s largest producers of ammonia, a global leader in ammonia sales and shipping, and actively working to decarbonize the ammonia production process.

Mortar shell hits Afghan wedding, kills at least six - Reuters

At least six Afghan civilians were killed and several more were wounded when a mortar shell hit a house during a wedding ceremony in northern Kapisa province, security officials said on Sunday.

The explosion on Saturday evening was in the Tagab district, which has seen fighting between the Afghan government forces and the Taliban insurgents.

Shayeq Shoresh, a spokesman for the provincial police, blamed the Taliban for firing the mortar and added that at least six civilians, including women and children, were killed and four more wounded.

But a senior security official in Kabul put the death toll at at least 10 and the number of wounded at 18.

A Taliban spokesman dismissed the allegation and said the mortar was fired by Afghan security forces.

Afghan civilians often bear the brunt of the attacks as they aree caught in the crossfire.

Violence has sharply increased across the country since Washington announced plans last month to pull out all U.S. troops out of Afghanistan by Sept. 11.

Nearly 1,800 Afghan civilians were killed or wounded in the first three months of 2021 during fighting between government forces and Taliban insurgents despite efforts to find peace, the United Nations said last month.

According to the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission’s annual report last year, there were 8,500 civilian casualties in 2020, including 2,958 deaths.

The first rides of The Boring Company’s Las Vegas Convention Center Loop have been shared online. And while the videos show a rather conservative version of the Loop system that features cars with human drivers and limited speeds, the potential of the tunneling technology is evident. 

One such video shared by Las Vegas-based @themelissavegas showed a demo run in a Tesla Model Y. The all-electric crossover maintained a speed of about 40 mph during the short, 2-minute trip, but the ride seemed quite smooth, if not uneventful.

The LVCC Loop’s limited speeds and manually driven Teslas have caught the eye of Elon Musk’s critics, many of whom have mocked the underground transport tunnels for being far too different from the Tesla CEO’s idea of a Hyperloop, a completely different technology. Others have criticized the LVCC Loop for being just an underground tunnel, which is exactly what it was designed to be. 

What is quite noticeable in the LVCC demos is that the transport tunnels have so much space to improve. And ultimately, the pieces are all there for any of the LVCC Loop’s future upgrades. The speed of the Teslas could be increased as Autopilot gets better and as the system matures, and this could be done likely with a software update. 

Adding more Teslas to the system would be a breeze as well. And with more cars that are moving faster, the LVCC Loop could improve its capacity in a very quick manner and at a relatively low cost. Couple this with later updates that remove the human driver and other changes that may involve using vehicles with more passenger capacity, and the LVCC Loop becomes a viable public transportation system. 

This is especially notable considering that the LVCC Loop was built for a very affordable price. It’s easy to mock the underground tunnels now because of its current state, but it is pertinent to note that the other project shortlisted for the site cost over four times as much. Ultimately, it must be emphasized that the Las Vegas tunnels today are merely seeds for what The Boring Company’s technology could truly do. And if one were to look at the system’s potential, then one can see a disruption in the making.

One Eleven Bistro’s chef-owner Anthony Scolaro to give free cooking demo - cleveland.com

HUDSON, Ohio – Anthony Scolaro, chef and co-owner of One Eleven Bistro in Medina, will host a live virtual cooking program at the Hudson Library & Historical Society.

The free program is 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 23.

Scolaro will guide viewers through the process of vegetable blanching and preservation and how to make a summer vegetable salad with fresh herbs.

One Eleven Bistro features modern American cuisine, with a focus on seasonal ingredient-driven menus. The restaurant holds regular wine dinners and other events.

Scolaro, who studied culinary arts at the University of Akron, also ran Trio in Tremont for a year, before it shut down in 2019.

20 people rescued hours after rollercoaster at San Antonio’s Six Flags Fiesta Texas stalls mid-ride - The Dallas Morning News

Twenty people were rescued Saturday afternoon after a rollercoaster at Six Flags Fiesta Texas in San Antonio stalled for hours, authorities said. No injuries were reported.

The Poltergeist coaster stopped mid-ride around noon, leaving the individually harnessed riders stranded in an upright position for about three hours. The San Antonio Fire Department and park crews worked to rescue them, San Antonio ABC affiliate KSAT-TV reported, and by mid-afternoon had walked all of the riders to safety.

It was unclear why the ride stalled. The rollercoaster was closed for the rest of the day as park officials investigated.

Gators Cap NCAA East Preliminary with Six More Eugene Tickets - Florida Gators

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Florida's women advanced six of its nine remaining entries during the final day of competition at the at the NCAA East Preliminary in Jacksonville. In total, the Gators track and field program collected a combined 18 entries to this year's NCAA Outdoor Championships, 10 by the men and eight on the women's side.
 
Jumper Natricia Hooper secured Florida's first qualification of the day with her first leap in the triple jump. The junior logged a mark of 13.72 meters (45 feet 0.25 inches) [+1.9] to finish second and earn her first-career NCAA Outdoor Championships berth.
 
On the track, redshirt freshman Grace Stark matched her personal-best time of 12.88 [-1.6] seconds in the 100-meter hurdles to secure her ticket to Eugene. That time is the fourth-fastest in school history.
 
Sprinters Talitha Diggs and Taylor Manson also posted qualifying times that rank on UF's All-Time Outdoor Top 10 list.
 
Diggs ran the fifth-fastest time in program history, crossing in 51.04 seconds for a new personal record and a trip to Oregon. Manson will join Diggs out west, having crossed in 51.38 seconds. A new personal record for Manson, that time ranks seventh in UF history.
 
On the distance side, redshirt sophomore Gabrielle Wilkinson will represent the Gators in the 800 meters at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. The SEC champion in the 1,500 meters finished third in the 800 Saturday with a time of 2:02.04 to secured her second-career trip to nationals.
 
Florida's No. 1-seeded 4x400-meter relay team, comprised of Manson, Sterling Lester, Doneisha Anderson and Diggs, capped off the night with a first-place finish and the Gators' 10th consecutive NCAA Outdoor Championships berth. The squad logged a facility record time of 3:27.51, one 100th of a second short of their season best.
 
The top 48 individual and top 24 relay declarations within the East and West Regions earned berths to their respective preliminary meet, and only 12 from each regional competition advanced to the championship meet in Eugene, Oregon, slated for June 9-12.
