Missouri Demo Days canceled for 2020 - Herald-Whig

HANNIBAL, Mo. — For the second consecutive year, Missouri Demo Days, which is the region's largest political gathering of any political party, will not be held, according to members of the event's planning committee.

In a statement, board member Joe Frese said organizers were not able to secure a venue for the event, which routinely draws hundreds of Democrats from throughout Northeast Missouri. For many years, the two-day event was held at the Hannibal Inn, a large conference hotel.

"It was a great place to have it," Frese said. "We have been to the Quality Inn, too, but it didn't really fit our needs. So the Hannibal Inn was really the only place to have it, but it no longer fits our needs, either."

The annual convention has drawn high-profile Democrats from throughout the state and nation to Hannibal, including former President Bill Clinton, former U.S. Senator and vice presidential nominee John Edwards, former U.S. Speaker of the House Tip O'Neill, and former U.S. Senator and presidential candidate Bill Bradley.

Other speakers have included U.S. Senator and presidential candidate Amy Kloubacher of Minnesota; U.S. Senator Dick Durbin of Illinois; and Massachusetts Congressman Seth Moulton.

Nearly every Democratic governor from within the past 50 years has spoken or attended Demo Days, including the late Mel Carnahan, former Gov. Bob Holden and former Gov. Jay Nixon. Other notable statewide political figures include former U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill, former U.S. Sen. Jean Carnahan, and former Secretary of State Jason Kander.

While Frese said the decision to not hold Demo Days was tough, he said the group is looking forward to hosting a summer version of the event.

"We are trying to have something lined up this summer. A picnic-style event to get everyone together," Frese said. He also acknowledged that the political sentiment of Northeast Missouri has changed.

"Truthfully, 20 or 30 years ago, we had Democrats in nearly every office in the state and in the county, but now that's changed," Frese said. "Demo Days was a time to get together with loyal Democrats, who still believe in and support Democratic candidates. It has been just a great event for lifelong friends to get together."

In addition, Frese said all area Democrats are being encouraged to attend the Northeast Missouri Democrat Rally, which is being held at the Lincoln County Fairgrounds in Troy on Saturday, March 21. Doors to the rally open at 12:30 p.m.

Maria Schieffer, a member of the Lincoln County Democratic Club, says event speakers are still being finalized but that state and local candidates have been invited.

"We are hoping to draw people from both St. Charles County and the northeast part of the state," Schieffer said.

Tickets for the event are $25 in advance and $30 at the door. The event includes a fried chicken dinner and dance following the rally.
